We gave two OpenAI models six birth charts to calculate — real dates, times, and cities across five decades and six time zones — asked each model twice, and checked all 192 resulting positions against Swiss Ephemeris, a widely used astronomical calculation library that many astrology applications build on. Quick Answer: ChatGPT astrology fails at calculation, not at language. How We Tested ChatGPT Astrology Accuracy

pyswissephlibrary), tropical zodiac, geocentric positions, Placidus Ascendant — a widely used astronomical calculation library that many astrology applications build on. - Test set: 6 births spanning 1975–2005, in Taipei, New York, London, Seoul, Los Angeles, and Sydney. Local times converted to universal time with full historical daylight-saving rules.
- Models:
gpt-5.2andgpt-5-mini, queried through the OpenAI API on 2026-08-27 with no tools enabled. To be precise about what this does and doesn't cover: we tested the unassisted models, not the ChatGPT app itself — the product can sometimes route a question through search or a code tool, which changes the picture. The no-tools case is what you get when the model simply answers your birthday question from memory, which is the common failure mode this article is about. - Protocol: each model calculated each chart twice, independently, so we could also measure whether it agrees with itself. For scale: 30° is a full zodiac sign. A 104° Moon error isn't "a bit off" — it's a Moon three signs away from yours, interpreted fluently.
The Pattern: Why the Sun Is Right and the Moon Is Fiction
The errors have a visible structure, and the variable that lines up with it best in our data is how fast the body moves.
The Sun advances about 1° per day along a schedule so regular that sun-sign dates are printed in magazines — a language model has effectively memorized it. Saturn averages roughly 12° per year (retrograde loops included), so even a rough sense of "Saturn was in Taurus around 2000" lands close. Those are the rows ChatGPT gets right.
The Moon moves about 13° per day. Getting it right requires an ephemeris lookup for your exact date and time — a memorized approximation isn't good enough. The Ascendant is harsher still: it cycles through the entire zodiac roughly once a day at an uneven rate, so placing it takes your exact birth time, your latitude and longitude, and real spherical trigonometry. In our data the Moon and the Ascendant each came out sign-correct in fewer than half the runs (5/12 for GPT-5.2, 2/12 for GPT-5-mini) — and those two placements are precisely what a personal reading hangs on. Your Moon is your emotional wiring; your Ascendant sets the entire house structure of the chart.
Speed doesn't explain everything — GPT-5.2's Venus (median 19.7°) came out worse than its Moon median, for instance — so treat this as the pattern that fits best, not a law. What the data does establish beyond argument: the placements a reading depends on most are the ones you can trust least.
This explains the seduction perfectly. ChatGPT earns your trust with the Sun — the one placement you already know — then invents the parts you can't check.
The Run-It-Twice Problem
Accuracy has a second dimension: does the model agree with itself? We asked each model the same six charts twice. Median disagreement between runs was 7.5° for GPT-5.2 — but the worst case was 110.5°. One birth (London, 1992) got a Moon 6.5° from truth on the first run and 104° off on the second. Same model, same question, two independent runs in our test.
That's the part no accuracy average can rescue: even when GPT-5.2 can nail a placement, you cannot tell from the answer whether this is the run where it did. A wrong chart reads exactly as confident as a right one.
You can reproduce this at home in two minutes: open two fresh chats, paste the same birth details into both, and compare the Moon and Ascendant. If they differ, at least one of them is invented — and nothing in the text tells you which.
So Is ChatGPT Astrology Real or Fake?
Split the question in two, because it has two answers.
Calculation: unreliable, per the tables above. An unassisted chat answer performs no ephemeris lookup, no time-zone conversion, no house math — it predicts plausible-sounding positions. (The exception: if ChatGPT actually runs code for you, with a visible "analyzing" step, it can genuinely compute. The failure mode in this article is the default one — a plain chat answer from memory.)
Interpretation: a different job, and one this experiment deliberately did not measure. Hand the model a correct chart and its task changes from astronomy to reading — applying astrological conventions to placements you can verify. Most articles about AI astrology accuracy argue in the abstract — "language models can't do math" versus "it read me so well." After running this test, we think both sides are answering the wrong question.
